Rev. Akhigbe Israel Odigie

General Overseer

Introduction

My name is Israel O. Akhigbe, and I am honoured to share with you the remarkable journey of how The Church (Overcomers Church) came into existence. This divine institution – Overcomers Church was founded and established by Jehovah God, using His servant Israel O. Akhigbe, on the 20th of December 1998, in the year of our Lord.

First Call to Ministry

The call to ministry was a profound experience for me. It all started in 1990 when The Lord God Almighty sent an elderly man, who was known as one of the “principalities and power” in our community (Esan Land) and he happened to be my mother’s uncle, to deliver a message to my mother about her son who was a Bank Manager at that time. The message was that The Lord God had called her first son, Israel Akhigbe to be a Pastor, to pray and lay hands on people for healing and deliverance. Although my mother shared this message with me, at that time, but I didn’t fully grasp its significance.

The False Accusations

In 1993, a pivotal moment occurred when one of my friends received a message from the Lord during prayer. The message warned of impending challenges in my workplace. My friend then asked the Lord how to navigate these challenges, and the Lord told my friend that I (Israel Akhigbe) should undertake the following specific actions:

  1. Attend a Bible-believing church.
  2. Engage in regular morning and evening prayers.
  3. Participate in Night Prayer (Vigil).
  4. Faithfully payment of tithes.

Upon receiving these instructions, I wholeheartedly embraced them and immediately started obeying the instruction. In 1994, I was appointed as the Corporate Finance Manager in the Corporate Finance Department of my bank. During my time at the bank before the appointment, I held various roles such as Branch Manager, Training Manager, Industrial Relations Manager, and even served as a Personal Assistant to two different Managing Directors. However, in 1994, as Corporate Finance Manager, I was in a meeting discussing the challenges faced by distressed banks in Nigeria. By error of omission or commission, I expressed my views, which were accepted. However, my views did not sit well with certain influential individuals present at the meeting who were agents of the authorities. Consequently, I became a target of the authorities who initiated an emergency bank inspection of my bank specifically targeting me.During the inspection, I was falsely accused of involvement in fraudulent activities that had taken place in the department several years ago before my tenure. Despite explaining that I was not present during the alleged frauds, the inspectors instructed the Managing Director (MD) to suspend me immediately. Although the MD questioned the decision to suspend me, but eventually gave in to their pressure and I was eventually unjustly suspended by the Managing Director without a formal query/accusation. This suspension lasted for about a year and a half before they could come up with a formal accusation against me.

Adversity - 28 Days Incarceration

I was arrested in 1996 and handed over to the military committee set up by the authorities in power at that time, without stating the reason for my arrest I was detained in a police station.During my time in the cell, an interesting incident occurred with the president, who called me Pastor, a title I dreaded. I told him I was not a pastor, but he insisted that I was. He pointed out that I carried a Bible. Despite my initial reluctance to accept this title, I eventually acquiesced to being called Pastor to avoid any potential repercussions/punishment in the cell. I began preaching and offering prayers to the over 200 inmates present. God’s grace was upon me, and there were signs and wonders in my prayers and preaching. I saw it as a special encouragement from Jehovah God.

G.O. Ordination

My ordination came about in this manner: I was the president of my City Chapter of the Full Gospel Businessmen Fellowship International for about seven years, and I disliked the activities of pastors. Educationally, I have a B.Sc. in Economics with a special interest in Econometrics, an MBA (Master of Business Administration), and post-graduate certificates in Training, Industrial Relations, and Executive Accounting, among others. In 1998, my friend, who was the manager of the Federal Mortgage Bank in Makurdi, called to ask me to accompany him to Makurdi as the bankers there were expecting me to lecture them for the CIBN (Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria) examination. He mentioned that those I had previously lectured in monetary theory had all passed their papers. As a lecturer for CIBN, I travelled to Benin City where we were to meet before proceeding to Makurdi. Upon my arrival in Benin City, I visited a brother who was or is the General Overseer of a church. The Pastor immediately inquired about my views on pastoral work. I responded, stating that I was not interested in pastoral work. Subsequently, I went to the house to rest while waiting for my friend, as it had been planned for us to meet. While I was resting, I heard a voice telling me that Cornelius was sent to Peter and Peter was sent to Cornelius. I then opened the Bible to the book of Acts 10:1 – end. At that moment, my father-in-law, an elderly and prayerful man, entered the room to greet me. He said, “My son, since you left your work at the bank, I have been praying for you. Just two weeks ago, the Lord told me that you are stubborn and have refused to serve Him. Therefore, God allowed all the events that have been happening to you. Please, my son, decide to serve God now, for He has promised to bless you financially, and you will lack nothing“.

After my father-in-law finished speaking, I returned to the Pastor I had met earlier to recount what had transpired. The Pastor then informed me, “I thought I misheard what God told me when you first came. While praying for the ordination of someone who sought ordination, the Lord instructed me to include Israel Akhigbe in Lagos, stating that he is an Evangelist. Knowing that the Lord cannot lie, I prepared your ordination form and certificate alongside the other person’s.” He then presented the form, and I signed it. In October 1988, I was ordained as a Priest.

The Church

In November 1998, the Lord directed me to start a church. Having learned the lesson of not questioning, when I was called in 1990, I sought advice from two pastor friends who resided in the same building. They both provided valuable guidance on how to start a church.Subsequently, the Lord sent a specific pastor to join me in the church in 1996. In 1997, I informed the pastor that I did not have a church. Therefore, when I decided to establish a church in 1998, I informed him of the commencement date, which was the 20th of December 1998. On the name of the church, the Lord God referred me to Exodus 33, from where the name THE GLORY OF THE LORD MISSION was given to the church because the church is going with a mission. On Sunday, 20th December 1998 the first church service was held in my sitting room. On that faithful day, a Pastor friend whom God had sent arrived early from Lagos. Together with the guidance of two other pastor friends, we prepared my sitting room for the immediate church service commencement while we searched for a suitable place for gatherings/service/worship. We prayed fervently for the success of the service and the church as a whole. During the service, a divine moment unfolded when The Lord God instructed my Pastor partner to return to his place of origin, as my calling to be a Pastor was imminent. Without hesitation, my Pastor partner obeyed the divine command and departed.Feeling overwhelmed and unsure of what to do, I found myself in tears, pouring out my heart to God in prayer. I expressed my doubts about my abilities to pray, write lessons, preach, and teach. In response, The Lord God assured me, saying, “I will teach you.” This encounter marked the beginning of a profound journey of learning and guidance from The Lord. For the past twenty-five years, The Lord God has faithfully taught and counseled me, guiding me and my family in obedience with reverence and awe. His presence and teachings have been a constant source of strength and inspiration as we strive to follow Him wholeheartedly with fear and trembling. Truly, The Lord God is mighty and faithful in all His ways.

Divine Inauguration of the Glory of the Lord Mission (GLM)The Glory of The Lord Mission started as a church on the 20th of December 1998. Since then, every year, from December 31st to January 3rd, I embarked on a spiritual retreat lasting about three days and three nights. In 2003, during one of these retreats at a hotel, a remarkable event unfolded. In this particular year (2003), I asked my friend to accompany me on the retreat, and he agreed. On January 3rd, 2004, at about 9:30 am, at the retreat, accompanied by my friend, as we concluded our prayers, a vision appeared to both of us simultaneously. We both saw that the whole of our city was covered with a green rug. We came to a golden gate with a man standing by it. He opened the gate to the green rug and said, “We have been waiting for you.” He took us to a U-shaped conference table where people were seated. He led us to the entrance of the U-shaped table where two chairs were placed. The people sitting had their name tags in front of them. Father Abraham was at the head of the table, with the kings of Israel to his right (Moses, King David, etc.) and the prophets of Israel to his left (Elijah, Elisha, Obadiah, and John the Baptist, etc.). At the entrance of the U-shaped table was a long table where about six disciples of our Lord Jesus Christ were seated, whose names I have forgotten. Upon our arrival at the table, Father Abraham stood up and said, “It shall be well” and the people that were with Abraham at the table and the host that followed them whom were far away from them, all echoed “it shall be well”. They spoke to us, but we could not comprehend the messages. Father Abraham then asked Obadiah to pray for the food, which was brought from heaven. We all ate and drank wine. Afterward, Father Abraham prayed for us while we knelt down, and he laid his hands on us. He stood up and said, “It is well” and the people with him at the table and the host that followed them echoed “it is well”. Abraham then said we should return. Suddenly, a staircase came down from heaven upon the green big and wide rug. Father Abraham held a white sheet of paper, but when we requested for it, he explained that our prayers for the three days were in the paper, and he was taking it to our Father in heaven. We requested to follow them, but he declined, stating that we have a great task to carry out on earth, hence their visit. He mentioned that if we did not leave the green rug, they would not go. As we stepped out of the green rug, they started ascending, waving their hands to us, and we reciprocated the gesture. In the month of July 2004, the Lord God sent a prophetic message to me, saying, “I have given you a great task and a great assignment for you to accomplish here on earth.” This divine encounter marked the beginning of a journey filled with purpose and spiritual significance for The Glory of The Lord Mission.
